Moving can be an extremely stress time, however we at Garrett's Moving & Storage have designed a series of tips other clients of ours have found helpful throughout the years. Most importantly, careful preparation is the key to the most efficient and stress-free move possible. We hope that you will find them just as helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 972-487-5843. 1) Be sure to provide the post office with a change of address form so that your friends, family, creditors, doctors, dentists, and all other service providers will be informed of your new home. (You may also obtain an IRS change of address form by calling 1-800-829-1040. This form may also be obtained from the IRS website. Or try our link to Form 8822) 2) Be sure to inform not only the electric, cable, trash service and telephone company of which you currently have service with your intention to move, but also the company that will provide your new service prior to your move date. This will prevent a delay in service to your new address and also prevent unnecessary billing after you have moved. 3) Prepare yourself a "move File". Once the move is complete, you will need a handy record of expenses incurred during the move to help you determine which expenses can be written off on your next tax return. 4) During your packing process, make sure that all boxes are securely taped both on the bottom and the top. 5) Anything that needs to be disassembled, for example, mirrors taken off dressers, headboards unbolted, and washer and dryers disconnected should be done ahead of time, this will not only save you save time but also make for a more efficient and productive move. 6) Make sure that you have set aside all important documents that will need to be readily available during and right after the move. 7) Place all packing supplies, including markers, wrapping materials, a pocketknife and even a tape measure in one convenient place so that they are not packed by mistake. 8) Prepare an "essentials" package so that you are not scrambling around on moving day or thereafter. Here are just a few things we have found all movers go searching for throughout the day. a. Scissors, Tape, Packing Materials b. Coffee Cups, paper plates, towels, c. Plastic Forks, Glasses, and Silverware d. Dish Soap & Trash Bags e. Toiletries f. Prescriptions, Aspirins and Other Pain Relievers g. Flashlight, Light Bulbs, Hammer h. Phone Books, Pencils and Paper i. Your "Move File" j. Telephone, Radio and Batteries 9) DO NOT pack flammables, aerosols, bleach, corrosives, ammunition, or plastic spray bottles to be put on truck. Take them with you in the car or even throw them away! 10) Tape shut food boxes and medicines and avoid packing liquids! 11) Try not to pack boxes over 50 pounds and also make sure they taped securely. Remember you have to be lifting those boxes. If the box is heavy the bottom may fall out 12) Make sure you are using a tape that is heavy duty such as duck or box tape so that it does not break. (DO NOT USE MASKING TAPE) 13) Mark your boxes well so that you will be able to organize your unpacking during that time. 14) Of course as always take precaution to the health of your indoor beauties. Plan on taking them also in the car or finding new homes for them. 15) The loss of important documents, precious home videos, photos, jewelry, rare coins, birth certificates, wills, stock certificates, insurance policies and other financial paperwork can be disastrous. Arrange for them to either be safely carried with you or shipped certified mail. 16) Packing takes time. Below are some things to remember. a. ALWAYS pack lampshades in boxes and remove light bulbs b. When packing fragiles such as dishes, crystal, china etc, make sure they are wrapped well and the box is marked "FRAGILE" to ensure extra care is given. c. AVOID using open-top boxes d. Try not to underpack boxes to prevent crushing of box e. Dresser drawers may be used to pack light unbreakables such as books (spaces should be filled with wadded paper) f. Chords of lamps should be wrapped around lamp to avoid accidental tripping g. Cushion mirrors, picture frames by wrapping in bubble wrap to prevent breakage We hope these tips have been both informative also provide for a safe and worry free moving experience. We look forward to doing the rest for you! Please call Garrett's Moving & Storage today at 972-487-5843 to schedule your move.
