2 months before you move
Start Collecting Boxes-If you start early, you’ll probably be able to get your boxes for free. Try friends and family, local businesses, and the free boards on Craig’s List.
Pack Non-Essential Items-To reduce the amount of time you’ll spend packing later, go ahead and pack non-essentials such as out-of-season clothing and decorations
Donate Items-Moving is a great chance to clean house and get rid of the stuff you don’t need. Sell your old stuff on Ebay or donate it to a charity like Goodwill
Choose a Mover-Make sure you choose a mover early so you have time to research companies and choose a reputable moving company.
1 month before you move
Let everyone know you’re moving-Let your post office, bank, publications you subscribe to, and insurance and credit card companies know that you are switching addresses.
Arrange for your utilities to be switched-Be sure to contact all your cable, utility, phone, and internet providers and arrange to get everything switched to your new address on your moving day.
Continue Packing-Keep packing away so you won’t be stuck with an entire household to pack one week before you move. To assist with your packing, buy color coded moving labels that correspond to each room.
1 week before you move
Clean out your fridge-If you want to transport your perishable food items, be sure to purchase a cooler. Otherwise, throw it out. Try not to buy too many groceries before the move so you can focus on getting rid of the stuff you already have
Prepare a 24 Hour Box-Pack a box or two with the essentials you’ll need for the first couple of days until you get settled in. Be sure to include toiletries, snacks, prescriptions, trash bags, and disposable silverware.
Throw Away Flammable Items-Flammables, bleach, aerosols, corrosives, ammunition, or plastic spray bottles should NOT go on the moving truck so you’ll need to get rid of them before moving day.
Disassemble Furniture-In order for the movers to wrap your furniture it and get it in the truck more efficiently, make sure you disassemble your furniture before they get to your house.
Confirm Arrangements With Your Mover-Call your movers to confirm their arrival time and any parking arrangement you may need to make.
