Planning for a spring move? A guide to getting rid of stuff

spring move

Did you know that you can save money, time and yourself from moving stress as you plan for a spring move? When moving most people are stressed out by the amount of stuff you own. Downsizing is not the only reason to get rid of stuff before moving. The more you have, the more it will cost you to move; and the more time it will take you to pack and unpack. On the other hand, moving with less stuff gives you the opportunity to redecorate. It allows you to create an atmosphere you’ve always wanted. While you can’t get rid of everything, it helps to know what to get rid of and the proper way to do it.

Most of the items that people decide to get rid before a spring move fall into 2 categories: Unusable clutter and usable items.

Unusable clutter:

Most items in this category, like the name suggests, are damaged items like: broken appliances, unused paper goods, cleaning products or outgrown clothes. These can add up quickly and take a lot of space.  There are some cases when you even forget that you have them.  Getting rid of these items should not take you a lot of time.

Usable items:

These are the items that are in good condition, and you might be still using some of them. Some of these items may include: Furniture, heavy appliances, sporting goods, clothes, books and more. With these Items, you can:

  1. Sell them

Some of these items might still have market value. Selling them before your spring move will not only reduce the moving shipping weight, it will also save you the packing and unpacking time. Also, you can earn some cash to add into your moving budget. With today’s online selling platforms like craigslist and 5 miles, there is a lot option where you can sell your stuff and some of them are local. You can also organize a garage or moving sale.

  1. Give them to friends and relatives

If you have emotional attachment or a lot of memories with some of the items, you might decide to give them to your friends and relatives. You can organize a farewell party and have your guests take what they want. There is no better way to say good-bye!

  1. Donate to charity

Giving to charity will not only give you the satisfaction of helping someone in need, you can also earn a deduction for qualifying items. Some local organization might pick up whatever you donate from your place.  However,  others might want you to drop them off.

Getting rid of stuff before a spring move is a liberating experience. It will save you the anxiety and the stress. You will be amazed how easy and fast it is to get back everything you need.
